The girl who would be queen

Finally, someone from the middle-class is going to be queen after a decade of waiting. The news exploded online last night in the middle of bad news detailing Ireland’s debt crisis, a cholera outbreak in Haiti, hostage crisis, and scarcity of health care jobs, and exciting news as well, like Harry Potter.

The would-be-queen is Kate Middleton, a daughter of self-made millionaires from Bucklebury, England. She studied college in St. Andrew’s University where she met and became friends with the prince in 2001. Currently, she works as an assistant buyer in a fashion company called Jigsaw.

How British Prince William planned to propose to Kate while on a vacation with her in Kenya, Africa was something every girl would have dreamed of having. He took with him his mother’s engagement ring (made of sapphire and diamonds), hid it somewhere for weeks until the right time came that swept Kate off her feet. That puts those persistent questions to rest, whether she would be wed to him or not. They’re now both 28, and are at the prime of their lives. The wedding is set on the summer of 2011 in London.

The next question would be, when would Kate be queen? Prince William is currently third in line. Probably two decades more. And I hope that they both last together as a couple.

The morning view along Ellingham Road during summer

Summer in the United Kingdom falls on July and lasts until September. And when you talk about summer in this part of Europe, it is not the usual 38-degree tropical heat that could burn a fiery hole on your tin roof. The weather is still cold at 18 degrees during noontime and people are out on the streets bathing on cold sunshine, some wearing light sweaters or jackets, others go about wearing very light clothing.

This photo was taken with my phone’s camera during one of those 15-minute walks along Ellingham Road. I would take my niece to school as early as 8am and pick her up at 3pm. Most of the time, I walked my way home all by myself especially when Jackie, a Brunei national, was not around. I would spend those quiet moments immersing myself in that beautiful surrounding and wondered why we never had any of those here in Manila.
