Books on sale

We didn’t know that inside the entire SM Mall of Asia complex two massive sale events were being held: the 4-day mallwide sale and one of the biggest book fairs at neighboring SMX Convention Center. Everywhere were people in shopping frenzy while soft jolly Christmas songs played in the background…well, to get everyone into shopping for holiday gifts this early. That’s what “Ber” months are about anyway in retail vocabulary.

While waiting for the 8pm AS1 concert at the adjacent event venue, we decided to drop by the Manila International Book Fair at SMX. I was torn between inspirational books, Maxwell’s series on leadership, Christian theology, Jane Austen titles and Wuthering Heights by Charlotte Bronte. But since I have no time to gush over English romance and doctrinal studies on religion require so much brain energy, I opted for a book on marriage. To prepare for it just in case. I can sense it coming my way real soon. By the way, I got the book called “Pillow Talk” for only P75. Not bad for a future investment.

Manila International Book Fair ends tonight. Entrance fee is P20 for adults, plus you’ll get a raffle ticket to win books or something more juicy if you’re that lucky.

He’s just not that into you: In 300 words

Twilight

I’d like to share what the boys did the other day. Meet Fakundo (not his real name), the latest recruit of the Cullens. His talent? X-Ray vision.

Now, the serious stuff.

What Greg Behrendt and Liz Tuccillo wrote in their book “He’s Just Not That Into You” were the same things your grandmother from the Titanic era would have told you about boys. Nothing really new. In fact, you might be in for a little surprise. Those small rational voices in your head apparently talk sense, if you only know how to listen.

Here’s basically what the book is trying to tell women whose minds were muddled by mixed emotions and endless guy interpretations. If the guy does not do anything to declare his affection, stop obsessing about him. He’s just simply into himself, and not so into you. If a guy thinks you are the one, nothing can stop him from moving the universe to make sure you both end up together. Unless, of course, you respond in his favor, or not. You have the power to decide who stays in your life, and who to annihilate.

Men are never hard to decipher, if only women exercise the use of their brains and avoid getting swept away by tides of emotions. However, I do not advise jumping into the bed with a guy to run a compatibility test. That leaves you in a more vulnerable situation. The bed should never be an option to settle relational issues.

Now you get the idea what the whole book hype is all about. If you’re still single, don’t lose heart. I don’t. I believe in a greater calling. What I mean is the men we are bound to end with are simply out there busy with a lot of things. When the time comes you meet him, that could only mean one thing: He’s ready.

Two bestsellers lead February’s movie list

hes-just-not-that-into-you

Two books turned into movies, He’s Just Not That Into You and Confessions of a Shopaholic, top next week’s pre-Valentine film line-up.

Jennifer Connelly, Scarlett Johansson, Jennifer Aniston, Ben Affleck, Justin Long, and Ginnifer Goodwin star in the movie version of Greg Behrendt and Liz Tuccillo’s bestselling book that tackles relational issues between genders. In the film, a woman confused by the men in her life pursues the advise of a columnist who apparently is on the same dilemma.

Sophie Kinsella’s bestseller “Confessions of a Shopaholic” takes the screen with Isla Fisher playing the lead role as Rebecca Bloomwood. Rebecca is a 25 year old who lives with her best friend Suze (Krysten Ritter), has a very boring job writing for a financial magazine and a shopping addiction that led to an ever-growing debt. Funny twists and turns happen as Rebecca tried to find ways to pay-off her obligations and cut back on her spending.

There are still more exciting films to watch out for like Australia and Valkyrie. (Hmm…turns out ex-couple Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman’s films are about to clash head-on.) I still have to watch Underworld next week and Fireproof movie on DVD that stars Kirk Cameron, the heartthrob from my high school years (hehe).

Currently on top of my read log is “He’s Just Not That Into You”. (I still have to finish Eclipse…ho-hum.) It’s on an e-book format I got somewhere for free. If you want a copy before you see the movie, you can now download it here and the required viewer to open an rgo file extension.

Six ways to combat post-holiday blues

Dining inside a fast food joint at midnight is fun. Queer, no?

Dining inside a fast food joint at midnight is fun. Queer, no?

The holiday fever is over the moment leftovers of New Year’s eve disappear from the fridge and “bah humbug” literally takes the form of your supervisor or those annoying collection agents from hell. (Now what did I just tell you about those uncontrollable appetites credit cards would love to baby sit?) The dreaded race to survival officially starts TODAY. Uh-huh.

Don’t worry, the magic still does work come Valentine’s Day. Splurge and repent by Holy Week. Anyway, given that scary scenario, I thought about a handful of antidotes to ease up the post-Christmas pain and sadness hovering above you like rain clouds.

1. Pray. Set your goals for the year, everyday ask God for guidance in prayer and do something about it.

2. Buy a book. Because I also belong to the Weekday Fright Club, I bought Max Lucado’s Cure for the Common Life. Excellent read for those faint in heart.

3. Schedule your own Sabbath. Decide a place and a day when you can laze around and do nothing but refresh your heart, soul and mind. I find lurking inside Starbucks with a good book between 10am and 11am on a Sunday therapeutic. I get freebies too (he he). Also try McDonald’s at midnight. It’s fun.

4. Movies. Can’t go to Australia? Escape through here.

5. Make new friends. Not that the old ones have died. Some simply decide to spend the rest of their lives with their better halves. Others were hostaged by mommyhood or have gone abroad. You need to expand that little horizon of yours.

6. Work. Hard. There are electric bills to pay, school fees to settle and auto insurance quotes to consider. Convenience comes with a price tag.
