The brains behind “We Are The World” were still around, but with no Michael Jackson this time.
Lionel Richie and Quincy Jones teamed up once more after 25 years, together with a new group of singers breathing a new life to an old song that fed Africa during a widespread famine in 1985, and the less fortunate in the US. While it’s nice to see veterans Barbra Streisand and Tony Bennett, and the likes of present-day hitmakers Celine Dion, Josh Groban and Fergie join in this new project to save earthquake victims in Haiti, one could still say that nothing beats the artistry of the original 1985 performance. And not because MJ was in the original version. USA for Africa remains top-of-mind in many musical aspects. Including the fact that only 40 plus individuals sang the original compared to today’s 70 plus singers and musicians. This year’s group should have done it better with all the available technology.
And maybe you’ve asked this question too: Why was Jamie Foxx doing the introduction? Was he representing Ray Charles?
Here’s the multi-awarded original that could probably feed the entire universe and give everyone a life insurance after 25 years of smashing music records. What set it apart was the performance’s sincerity. It moved everyone to action. It has both heart and soul.
And since most of you were still babies during that time or were not yet been born, allow me to introduce the artists in order of appearance:
