Why I will not vote for Noynoy

It was probably an overwhelming sympathy during Cory Aquino’s death, Kris Aquino’s moving message and our exasperation towards Gloria’s excesses that endeared Noynoy Aquino to a lot of us. We were reminded of Ninoy Aquino’s sacrifice, and we thought Noynoy could relive that. We remembered how Edsa was like. And forgot what it was 25 years after.

Again, people saw hope in the eyes of Noynoy. He was pure and simple with a hard-punching slogan, “Hindi ako magnanakaw!”. And as usual, Pinoys believed the fairytale and they failed to see the other side of Noynoy. He’s been in government service for a long time and so far, there weren’t that many accomplishments compared to what his contemporaries in the Congress and the Senate had achieved. Had he been sleeping?

Of course, you can’t really find too many faults on a guy who has not really done anything. Noynoy epitomizes the word “mediocre” and he is absolutely does not share the qualities of his dad, Ninoy. Kris does, in testosterone.

What did he do during the Hacienda Luisita Massacre in 2004? He was then a congressman in Tarlac, and he simply put the blame on NPA rebels for the mayhem to save the family’s interest. Just in case you still don’t know, Hacienda Luisita was bought in late 1950’s by his late grandfather, Peping Conjuangco Sr. from the Spaniards with government help. (President Magsaysay was Ninoy and Cory’s ninong in their wedding.) The condition set was to give the land back to its tillers at a reasonable cost within a 10-year time frame. (Turnover was supposed to happen in 1967.) To cut the long story short, the deal was long overdue and never happened. The workers were fired to find a job elsewhere and the outspoken ones were brutally murdered.

How would you expect someone who has a lackluster record in public service be able to turn this country around? Noynoy can’t even clean his own backyard. Does he have the political will to control those people who will work under him? What I see are further disappointments and his vice president, Mar Roxas, if ever he wins, running the show for him.

What’s wrong with Arnel Pineda’s “Lupang Hinirang”?

I thought Arnel Pineda sang it a little way too high, but nevertheless, was still okay for me. The lead singer of Journey appeared to be sincere with his rendition during Pacquiao-Clottey fight. And was probably caught surprised when the National Historical Institute chastised him for making it sound like a pop song. It was, well, quite a slow version so to speak compared to Julian Felipe’s original march.

It wasn’t the first time a singer was criticized over versions of Lupang Hinirang sang live in international competitions. Lea Salonga, Sarah Geronimo, Christian Bautista and Martin Nievera had their shares of lashings in the past. It’s Arnel Pineda’s turn now.

So where did it all go wrong?

R.A. 8491 specifies that Lupang Hinirang “shall be in accordance with the musical arrangement and composition of Julian Felipe.” If you’ve heard that marching music in our schools, TV stations, the Olympics and even inside the cinemas, you pretty much have the idea that it should be performed with much fervor. It was originally intended as an instrumental freedom march when we declared independence from Spain more than a century ago.

And come to think of it, during my time in school, those teachers sang the lyrics solemnly too. And I didn’t know until now that it should have been sung like a marching song. Now who’s at fault?

Technically, these singers have violated this law when they sang it solemnly like a prayer or a ballad. But I think they shouldn’t be lambasted for having committed this error. I believe that these artists had no slightest intentions of disrespecting the national hymn. I think it was an honest mistake on their part.

Instead of being critical, NHI should perhaps take a proactive way of educating these artists, event organizers and everyone as well. We could have probably prevented undue embarrassment from spreading like accutane side effects by dealing with the problem positively, instead of lashing out on them. It takes two to tango.

Clottey: Peek-a-boo!

There are usually two things every boxing afficionado would love to see during a Pacquiao event – the person who gets to sing the national anthem and the boxers of the main event.

Journey’s Arnel Pineda certainly did not disappoint. He was an extremely talented guy whose pitch soared up to the rooftop of the Dallas Cowboys Stadium. But come main event, I zonked out.

I fell asleep watching Pacquiao boxed an unresponsive Clottey. But it’s okay. It was free (perks of the job). If I paid a whopping P800 ticket to see Clottey act like a wall of Jericho, I would have punched him myself. It would be tad easier, like popping an adult acne to oblivion.

Clottey decided to be Pacquiao’s punching bag. Most of the time he was behind his boxing gloves shielding himself from those fiery combinations. And that obviously was a no-brainer.

It was rather an easy task than to get head-to-head with the pound-for-pound king. He had no title to lose, not even a reputation to rescue. If he went down on the floor, it’s still a win-win situation for him. He takes home a pricey cut from their boxing and PPV shares. So he shielded himself from those punches all the 12 rounds in order to come of it alive and be able to enjoy the booty.

That’s what exactly happened today. On the bad side, Clottey also earned the ire of millions of viewers who felt robbed watching a boring fight.
