Another hit from Cebu Dancing Inmates

Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center (CPDRC) is no longer just a maximum security prison but has turned its facilities into a dance studio famous for “The Dancing Inmates”. After their “Thriller” performance in 2007 that brought them to Time Magazine’s most popular viral video list, the accused bad boys returned to You Tube in orange jumpsuits and black shirts performing Michael Jackson’s “This Is It”.

Michael Jackson’s long-time choreographer Travis Payne and dancers Daniel Celebre and Dres Reid came to visit and joined them in another You Tube phenomenon. You should watch them. The guys were having fun in their stay, not to mention the entire exercise was keeping them fit without relying much on joint supplements. Makes the entire detention period worthwhile.

If you ever wonder how this group of 1500 inmates was formed, provincial security advisor Byron Garcia derived the inspiration from The Shawshank Redemption wherein Mozart’s Figaro played all over the prison.

Back to Body Shop

In one of my frequent trips to the mall, I happened to pass by a Body Shop store. Somehow I just got lucky to find that in the middle of January already, they were still having sale.

I am not so much of a Body Shop fan. I get body butter and shower gels as gifts from friends. But when I saw their new Tea Tree skin line, and scanned the labels quick, I decided to buy myself first an exfoliator facial wash (P650). In a week, I noticed it worked well in getting all dirt out of clogged pores, controlled excess oil and yes, even those nasty breakouts on my chin.

I thought about giving my regular adult acne treatment in my friend’s spa a break and try out what seemed to be a more natural alternative to pricking. The following week, I decided to add more to the line – tea tree toner (P450), night cream (P650) and a face powder (discounted at P717).

So far so good. I didn’t have that much breakouts for the past 3 weeks. Not to mention that my blemishes started to lighten too.

I really don’t recommend that you try these products. The treatment works differently with every skin type. I’ve read that not all people with acne are happy with tea tree products, Body Shop or not. Tea tree is not really a cure, but something that could be used to prevent unwanted eruptions. Acne is caused by different factors. (Mine can be blamed to genes aggravated by stress, lack of sleep and the ever polluted Manila environment.) I suggest consulting your dermatologist.

Haiti: History and mystery

When people say “Carribean”, the first things that come to mind are sunny skies, blue seas, beach huts, Marvin Gaye, voodoo and cruises. Haiti may share those blue sunny skies with their Carribean neighbors, but situation on the land surface is not at all picture-perfect.

I couldn’t pinpoint where Haiti exactly was until the January 12 earthquake caught us all in shock. Haiti went back to spotlight no longer carrying bad news of ousted or exiled presidents, but photos of a country in ruins. International support came pouring in, but we just don’t know how long it will sustain the lives of 3 million Haitians badly hit by this calamity.

Perhaps, for most Haitians, life has not been better for the past 200 years. Their history was marked by colonial rule, slave revolts, dictatorship, military juntas and economic sabotage. Haiti was considered as one of the richest colonies of France in the 19th century, but that was a reputation made on the backs of African slaves. Then there was their first taste of independence, a couple of years ahead than the United States. But the glory was short-lived. France asked Haiti to pay back 90 million francs as reparations for the damages on properties and loss of slaves the uprising caused them. It forced the young republic to take on high-interest loans to pay off that debt, eating up a huge chunk on their yearly national budget that should have been allocated to social and economic programs. Having two unpopular voodoo doctors turned presidents-for-life didn’t help either. Haiti sank in deeper as most of its people thrived under fear and poverty.

It was Voodoo that allows them to escape their harsh reality. So don’t wonder if it shares the same altar with Catholicism. For an average Haitian, lines to heaven are busy he might just need an alternative. A back up just in case the white man’s god has been sleeping.

We do all face the same music of suffering inspired by wars, greedy governments, debts, Outer banks foreclosures, family strife, loss of lives, battles with nature, etc. But life isn’t all magic. People need to get their acts together.
