Are we ready for the Big One?

fault line phils

While it is true that the Bible spoke of the end-time scenarios as precursors to the Second Coming, we can’t remain sitting ducks. Preparation is needed as we are being drawn one day closer to the Big One. And what I mean by the Big One is that giant fault line sleeping under us that might wake up soon after hundreds of years of dormancy.

Studies were conducted on the Marikina Valley Fault Line – that earthquake prone belt on which we, Metro Manila lurkers, sit on. The fault extends from San Mateo, Rizal all the way down to Taguig down south, carrying with it the weight of these cities: Marikina, Pasig, Makati, Paranaque and Taguig. The last known earthquake that shook us from our sleep was the 1990 Cabanatuan earthquake, burying hundreds of people inside the rubbles of Hyatt Hotel in Baguio. A quake of that magnitude zeroing on Metro Manila would prove to be more disastrous. Our cities are fully-loaded.

California has been preparing for the next move of San Andreas fault for the past decades. They have been conducting statewide drills, the last one being two days ago involving millions. While our local building administrators have been conducting earthquake drills amid discussions of local officials and international experts on this spanning 50 years or more, we still doubt this government’s preparations and readiness. The flooding alone that took 5lbs. off my current weight without weight loss pills
remains unsolved. Our city plans that took years of study remain as they were – plans. Or if not, we alter them to suit our short-range vision for our cities while most of our people leave the countryside for lack of livelihood opportunities and dwell in those shanties beside every river. Then we wonder why city mayors and government agencies are getting lawsuits these days for civil and property damages. And everyone has been damning the dam.

The ugly truth is our own survival largely depends on us individuals. We can start planning for our own emergency drills. It can’t wait.

  1. I’m so scared about this, I worry about my kids, they are still so small and my house is at the foot of the small hill, I worry about landslides. so i just pray hard for our safety.

  2. Let’s hope and pray that this won’t happen. It could be very catastrophic.

  3. If that things happened we must be prepared and pray harder as we could. Let us unite as we are in edsa revolution for a large vigil or prayers in different churches. Let’s give an hour or two to stop and give our voices to the LORD… He will be the only one who can protect us to any other disaster that will occur to us… That was also his way of calling his son’s and daughter’s who’s not going to the right direction of their lives… This is the time to worship him and repent in our sins… So my dear brothers and sisters let us all pray for our safety and ask for our Lord Jesus Christ his guidance… May this will not happen to our country and may all affected countries be united and help each other to stand again with the blessing of our Almighty God Jesus Christ.

  4. Definitely I’m not ready but if that time comes nothing we can do but be ready with our souls and leave it all to the Lord whatever His will is, but I do hope and pray it won’t come. But ofcourse lets keep ourselves safe as much as possible, and take precautionary measures for our survival, it’s still best to prepare than do nothing. What’s happening now is a wake up call for every individuals to really do their share to conserve energy and care for the environment, and also for the people in power to spend public funds wisely, and to focus on what is necessary. Lets all be united in prayer, have decipline among ourselves and do something for the common good and not just for our own vested interest.
