Transformed

This sequel directed by Michael Bay would definitely raise the bar in the special effects department. I think Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen is more explosive than the first one. They had the movie shot in those pyramids in Egypt where Shia’s character, Sam Witwicky, deciphers Transformers’ origin and existence through symbols. New robotic characters were introduced and expect more live action from lead stars Shia Labeouf and Megan Fox, and the rest of the cast. Hugo Weaving lent his voice to Megatron and Australian actress Alice Lucas plays Shia’s college friend. Josh Duhamel’s character, Captain Lennox, rocks as usual. It’s a date on June 25 and the race to secure seats has already started, unless you would like to endure those snake lines.

Here are some helpful reminders when you watch Transformers. If there are two of you watching, let the other one buy food for both of you while you line up for the tickets. But if you know someone from the theatre, it’s time to pull some strings. I’m pretty sure all cinemas will be booking seats until the wee hours in the morning. Reserve a seat in the middle or last row. Otherwise, risk sporting a migraine with those hardcore actions. Believe me, my prediction is as accurate as those diet pills that work. If the swine flu scares the hell out of you, wear a mask. Well, Optimus Prime always does.

What were your Idols like before stardom?

Rummaging through the archives of You Tube was what I did for the past couple of days shunning sunlight. That’s what you do when your face was Hell Boy-red.

I missed the first three seasons of American Idol which left me basically clueless about Kelly, Reuben and Fantasia. Together with the rest of big winners, it’s interesting to see how they all started by watching their audition videos. I think one thing they had in common was they already knew they would make it big time.

Kelly Clarkson, Season 1 winner, was the first Idol to win two Grammy Awards in 2006 for her album “Breakaway”.

Season 2 winner and Grammy nominee Reuben Studdard won by a close margin of 134k votes against runner-up Clay Aiken.

Eight-time Grammy Award nominee Fantasia Barrino was the youngest Idol winner at 19 until Jordin Sparks.

Country singer and Martina McBride fan Carrie Underwood has a string of big wins after her AI experience.

Despite his AI success, Taylor Hicks didn’t do well in selling his post American Idol album. But we really can’t tell what the future has for him, right?

Jordin Sparks was the youngest contestant to win American Idol at 16. Her records has been popular among the younger crowd. Long way to go.

Season 7 winner David Cook is a big Daughtry fan and has been known for his out-of-the-box takes on popular songs during his AI days that wowed millions.

By the way, it’s going to be a long weekend this week. I hope everyone enjoys it the way people vacationing at Outer Banks do.

Swine flu scare

h1n1I know this photo is yucky enough to make you lose your appetite. This is swine flu beaming under the lens.

H1N1, known as the swine flu virus, first appeared in Mexico then in the United States just last March 2009. The pandemic caused panic in Mexico as more people were diagnosed with flu-like symptoms while others died. The United States declared a public health emergency. And lately, Manila is catching up with the trend.

Although I still have faith in Pinoy’s resilience to poverty, pollution and all types of germs, swine flu is something that shouldn’t be taken lightly in the absence of a sound public health program. So here are some ways to prevent the virus from possessing you:

1. Wash your hands at all times with soap and alcohol-based hand sanitizers.

2. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Germs spread through them.

3. Cover your nose when you sneeze and your mouth when you cough. Throw your tissue after use.

4. Avoid crowded places as much as you can. If you’re a cinema fanatic like me, better look for those exit signs, go home and watch DVD instead in your comfy sofa. But I won’t prevent you from trooping down the theaters when Transformers 2 debuts on silverscreen this month.

5. Eat healthy. Avoid stress. Take vitamins.
