Dolphins washed up at Bataan shores

Dolphins washed up at Bataan shores

The last time I was in a Dolphin show was about 3 years ago during a company outing. While dolphins and sea lions were a lovely sight to watch, I had this uncomfortable feeling about them being torn away from their pods and exploited up to a certain degree. Maybe some of you knew the feeling that something wasn’t really right. That they didn’t belong to a recreational park but out there in the deep blue sea.

The Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) has this campaign to bring animals in captivity back into the wild where they actually belong. You can always check what their campaign is about at their website and understand the cause better. And just recently, PAWS has launched the “Homeless, Not Worthless” campaign for stray dogs and cats that need foster homes.

While most of our time has been eaten up by various concerns from families, kids, careers, economic slowdown, proliferation of TV ads on various industrial products to nuclear exercises, let’s stop for a while and smell the flowers. Let’s show a bit of compassion before we forget how.

Archuleta and Cook

Archuleta and Cook

The rumored January 27 concert of David Cook came to pass like the Y2K apocalypse that wrought no damage except on some freaks’ credibility and ability to read the future. (Well, who can?) Now, local AI fans started the new year with disappointment. Who wouldn’t be when the American Idol of Season 7 himself confirmed it over a radio station last year? But, of course, the artist really had nothing to do with the change of heart. It’s the producer’s prerogative. Whoever it was, well, better luck next time.

An officemate told me that actor Jomari Yllana’s production outfit called Fearless is bringing in American Idol’s two Davids, Cook and Archuleta, in a concert this summer at the SM Mall of Asia. It is scheduled on the 2nd week of May. Hmm. If that’s the case, BETTER SELL TICKETS NOW!!!

By the way, we had dinner the other night at Salt & Pepper. It’s a resto along EDSA, Greenhills (near Annapolis) owned by a discount furniture company. Try their kebabs. It’s yummy.

Actor Sean Penn and the real Harvey Milk

Actor Sean Penn and the real Harvey Milk

The story of Harvey Milk was part of my must-see Oscar-winning movies. I chose to see it last weekend over Slumdog Millionaire. I thought with Oscar-winner Sean Penn there, the movie was all worth my limited free time.

Indeed it was. (Movie watching at home was great. The brothers have upgraded the sound system and bought a new tv mount.)

The movie “Milk” was set on the 70′s in some “freedom” San Francisco strip they call Castro. This was where Harvey Milk (Sean Penn), the first open gay official elected to public office, and his lover Scott (James Franco) sought refuge and started their new lives together after escaping sexual discrimination in the East Coast.

Harvey Milk had more to offer than just a 8 to 5 regular insurance guy living in a closet. He was a resourceful businessman, he knew how to talk to people and relate to them. The movement against discrimination of gays in California was born in his photo studio and home in Castro Street. Eventually, the cause spread all over America after his assassination in late 70′s.

The movie challenges the way straights and the most moral among us view gays. While the Bible has explicitly warned us about the dangers of homosexuality, God also spoke openly against pride, lust, greed, etc. But He has never closed His door towards those who seek change. Now, what difference does a homosexual, a cheater or even a bigot have? All of us need grace.
