Living in the age of plenty

unimart

We’re actually in the middle of a recession but things around my neck of the woods are still normal. People go on with their daily lives – sending kids to school, doing the laundry, going to the market, watching movies and shopping for pieces of clothing every now and then. Most of us don’t own big houses, have large sums in our bank accounts and can afford luxurious holiday on a cruise liner or anything similar to those Orlando vacations . We remain at the mercy of corporations, running errands for them and thriving at our meager incomes. But the astonishing fact remains. We remain happy and content with the small things we receive daily.

I think that cultural mindset of Pinoys makes all the difference. We don’t stab ourselves with knives at the slightest failure. We simply laugh at them knowing we will survive whatever it takes. We have been through the worst of our times.

I wish that can also be said of others. Let me share what I learned from this evening’s church service, taken from Christianity Today:

The Paradox of Our Time in History is that we spend more, but have less; we buy more, but enjoy it less. We have bigger houses and smaller families; more conveniences, but less time; more medicine, but less wellness. We read too little, watch TV too much, and pray too seldom. We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values. These are the times of tall men, and short character; steep profits, and shallow relationships. These are the days of two incomes, but more divorce; of fancier houses, but broken homes. We’ve learned how to make a living, but not a life; we’ve added years to life, not life to years; we’ve cleaned up the air, but polluted the soul.

On growing old

I have turned a year older today. Until now, I still couldn’t believe it. There is so much about growing old that sends shivers down my spine. Maybe I really should stop doing the math this time, and spend whatever little is left of my energy doing something worthwhile.

Like this.

It's yummy inside.

It's yummy inside.

Then trim down.

You know how things are with older people. Our vital parts start to depreciate and the best way to slow down the decay, aside from wearing the One Ring, is to watch what you eat, take time to exercise and start feeling good about yourself.

Why, all of a sudden, do I sound like Cory Quirino?

Macintyre, Gokey make up my AI 8 top list

A blind young man and a bespectacled Robert Downey Jr. look-alike are my top bets in this year’s American Idol. These two guys caught my attention among the thousands of hopefuls who tried to win the judges’ approval. Not for anything else, I think Scott Macintyre and Danny Gokey definitely have what it takes to get through the finals. Both have the voice, the character and their own personal tragedies that are most likely to turn their lives around in the coming months.

Scott Macintyre is a 23-year-old singer-songwriter from Arizona. He was born almost blind. But that did not stop him from winding up in the Top 36. I won’t even be surprised if he reaches the Top 3. The guy has an incredible talent, and it doesn’t look like he needs sympathy from anyone to get him on top of the race.

Just a month before his American Idol audition, Danny Gokey’s wife passed away. The 28-year-old singer came to audition with his best friend Jamar and wowed the judges with his version of “Kiss From A Rose”. That performance was really amazing. Excellente.

Let’s see how this prediction would end up in May.
