Finding Aslan

Anything in this world can hold for a moment but not Prince Caspian. The first thing I did the moment I woke up yesterday was to take a bath and go to Sta. Lucia East Grand Mall to see the Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. No take-away food but pure and undiluted movie spree. It’s not even a weight loss program should one must think of it that way. (What was I talking about?)

Aslan and Lucy

The movie opened with the birth of Miraz’s first-born son and the fateful escape of Caspian X through the help of his covert Narnian professor, Cornelius. Armed with a sword and Susan’s magical horn, the young prince sought refuge in the woods with palace guards following his trail. Cornered by Narnia’s creatures and Telmarine guards in hot pursuit, Prince Caspian blew the horn in desperation. Peter, Edmund, Susan and Lucy were summoned back to Narnia from England’s underground train station for another rescue mission.

Narnia’s second movie installment of the C.S.Lewis children’s book series is ripe with stories of hope and desperation, faith and doubt. For more than a thousand years after the death of the White Witch, the Golden Age of Narnia became part of the many tales written in history books. Narnians in slavery has forgotten about Aslan.

Narnia was waging a losing battle against a powerful Telmarine force commanded by a tyrrant, King Miraz. In utter desperation, the Pevensie children and Prince Caspian almost fell into the trap of summoning the White Witch back to life in the same manner Israel’s king, Saul, employed the witch of Endor to bring back the dead prophet, Samuel. But Lucy believed, searched for Aslan and found him at the hour of their greatest need.

Prince Caspian the movie warms the hearts of viewers not only with live actions, spectacular effects and brilliant actors. The Pevensies came back learned and matured and Caspian’s character evolved from being a reluctant heir to someone out to fulfill his mission. C.S. Lewis’ book was obviously inspired by the story of Moses as a prince of Egypt and the events that happened in the Old Testament Books of Kings, Chronicles and Samuel. Hope does not possess a new face as the movie tagline tries to put it. Rather, the hope of Narnia has always been on the powerful lion, Aslan. The movie, Prince Caspian, spoke so much about a loving God, who happens to go by the title “the Lion of Judah”. His invitation remains:  “Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.” (Jeremiah 33:3)

The Pevensies believed. So should you.
