Here’s good news. I don’t think July’s bad weather would stop you from trooping down to Eastwood City in Libis, QC. Not even a transport strike can hold you off at bay. Ladies and gents,  Chris Daughtry is coming!

Eastwood City sets the stage for American Idol Season 5 finalist Chris Daughtry. On July 29, this multi-platinum hitmaker will perform live before hundreds of screaming fans and Eastwood dwellers who’d do more than just peep out of their office blinds. They might just consider climbing the trees. If you have always felt strong about not being able to rescue him from getting the ax during his Idol days, now it’s time to show him your love.

Daughtry will also perform in Malaysia (July 25), Indonesia (July 26) and Singapore (July 27) before coming to Manila.

That one is a catchy slogan of a local airline. They made a pretty good mark in repositioning their brand as cheaper but reliable alternative to other bigtime carriers. I’ll book a flight with them when a friend and I have really decided to explore Hong Kong by end of this year. It would be just in time for Dong Zhi Winter Solstice Festival when everyone is in a happy and giving mood. I have also missed autumn and winter seasons.

This is one trip that won’t exactly render my bank account dry. I found a long list of cheap hotels and airline packages online. I think I could survive in a $500 budget for 3 days. I will eat noodles and dumplings, shun away from shopping and visit Disneyland. I am not exactly a very difficult person to please.

The guy called Ironwulf is probably beaming with excitement. After years of travelling extensively from Batanes to many parts of Asia, he is ready to show the world images of diverse cultures he took with his camera. Five days from now, his first ever one-man photo exhibit will open at the Filipinas Heritage Library near the Makati Stocks Exchange in Ayala Avenue. The exhibit, Living By Water, reveals the simple and quiet lives of people thriving in the coastal regions.

Opening night is on May 12 at 7PM. Cocktails will be served and the opportunity to meet new people abounds. Be there, wear your clothes and be in your best behavior.

On the side note, I like this new PS3. I hope the brothers will get one soon. And I heard that Kobe Bryant has won this year’s MVP title. I am not exactly a Kobe fan. My brother is. So if there would be someone who will rejoice over it, it would be him and thousands of Kobe minions out there.

This gruesome crime committed by Josef Fritzl, an Austrian national, has reached the international headlines last month. CNN and BBC news covered stories on how he imprisoned his daughter, Elisabeth, in a cellar for 24 years where he raped her and fathered all her 7 children. Elisabeth, now 42 but looked older than her age, was declared missing in 1984 by Fritzl and his wife, Rosemarie. They told the police that she joined a religious cult. It was only in the last week of April that Elisabeth was rescued by the authorities when she and her father, Fritzl, visited her 19-year-old daughter, Kerstin, in the hospital. Kerstin was brought to the hospital for kidney failure.

How this mind-boggling diabolical crime was hatched and took place for two decades was beyond human reason. Not even a laptop memory can store such horrid details nor Hollywood writers have a stomach for it. The sound-proof cellar beneath the 3-storey house Fritzl owns was built as living quarters. To obtain license to build, he filed it under the guise of a nuclear bunker. It can be accessed through 8 doors, two of which are password-protected by Fritzl. The passage leading through the cellar lacked oxygen that investigators access it for only an hour a day. This is where his daughter was abused, lived and gave birth to his 7 children.

The unfathomable evil deed of Fritzl is perhaps the worst in many of Austria’s related crimes. Check out others:

Natascha Kampusch was imprisoned in a cellar for eight years in Strasshof, Austria. She was kidnapped at the age of 10.

In 2007, it was revealed that a middle-aged middle-class lawyer in Linz, Austria had suffered a nervous breakdown after her divorce, and imprisoned her daughters Viktoria, Katherina and Elisabeth in a squalid cellar in almost total darkness from the ages of seven, 11, and 13 for seven years up to 2005. The girls’ symptoms after their release bear some similarity to the Fritzl children’s.

Maria K. A 23-year old mentally disabled woman, was locked up periodically for nine years in a coffin-like wooden chest by her parents in Vienna, Austria. She was released in 1996.

Lydia Gouardo, a French woman who was beaten, raped and burned (with both acid and scalding water) by her parents for 28 years and has six children by her stepfather. Although not imprisoned in a fashion similar to the Fritzl case, she was tied down during her first pregnancy to prevent her from seeking an abortion.

Kaspar Hauser, a mysterious foundling in 19th century Germany, is believed to have spent the first 16 years of his life imprisoned and in isolation, before he appeared on the streets of Nuremberg, Germany on 26 May 1828 following his apparent release from captivity. Kaspar Hauser Syndrome is an established term to describe the deficient statural, intellectual and social growth induced by child abuse, notably social isolation.

Fritzl is currently facing charges of incest and sexual abuse.

There were around 4 cinemas in SM Megamall that offer Iron Man. I thought I would miss a seat knowing it’s the last day of the sale weekend. People were basically everywhere with their kids buying school bags. They were most likely to have that detour from bookstore to the cinema. So I reserved a seat on the balcony. (Mind you, I really find this balcony-orchestra thing a major economic class distinction. It’s so Pinoy.)

When I entered the theatre, the place was nearly empty with people and trailers of upcoming movies were on screen. Most of the viewers who entered were adults. Apparently, kids didn’t like Iron Man at all.

While waiting for Iron Man, I watched a number of movie trailers from Prince Caspian (yey!) to Wanted (James McAvoy dropped his English accent to be an assasin). Among the spectacular movies this summer (not our summer, but the June to September summer in the West), I find the Speed Racer too fancy, almost unreal. This new movie of the Wachowski brothers looked a Pixar movie. Race cars with their fancy car spoilers and stunts on colorful 3D race tracks seemed cartooney. I actually had a headache watching Speed Racer’s trailer.

Now, did I love Iron Man movie? Yes, I did. The bill fit Robert Downey Jr well. In fact, he IS Tony Stark and no one else could play that role like he did. Downey will go down the cinematic history as The Iron Man, no longer as Hollywood’s bad guy.
