In other parts of the world, particularly in dog-loving countries, laws were enforced to prohibit illegal dog trade and dog meat consumption. Dogs are often regarded as regular part of a household, a family member, even a best friend. So imagine the horrors of seeing your best friend served on a platter hot and steamy. Such as this one cooked Chinese-style.
A local counterpart of this dish is called Asocena - “aso” is a Filipino word for dog, “cena” is a Spanish word for “dinner” or “an evening meal”. Cleaned dog meat is cooked in strong vinegar. Cubed potatoes, pepper, soy sauce, tomato sauce, tomato paste, garbanzos, green peas and bay laurel leaves are added to the mixture.
In South Korea, they call their dog meat recipe “gaegogi” and “bosintang”.
Before their meat made it to the kitchen, these dogs have first suffered severe brutality and trauma in the hands of their heartless captors.
Animal Kingdom Foundation, Inc., a local affiliate of International Wildlife Coalition Trust (IWCT) based in the United Kingdom, has witnessed for countless times the appalling conditions of these dogs during rescue operations.
“Snouts muzzled with rusty tin cans, front legs tied behind their backs, piled up in an enclosed vehicle, with gall bladders bursting due to heat, and dying along the way to the illegal slaughter houses scattered in the northern region…The “lucky” ones who survive the ordeal are strangled or whacked on the heads like baseballs and cooked for dinner or as appetizer during drinking sessions.”
Illegal dog trade still exists in the Philippines no matter how many laws were passed to crack it down. It is a thriving multi-million dollar business. Animal rights activists, foundations, government authorities and even media have joined forces to hunt down illegal dog traders. Recently, a major crackdown was featured in GMA7 by Jessica Soho.
